Pia received an Award for Innovative Practice and New Initiatives in Teaching in December 2011 for her work at the Audiometry Teaching Team at OTEN, in recognition of the development and implementation new teaching strategies for distance audiometry education.
Pia also develops and delivers online learning and face to face materials for audiometry students as well as for commercial courses. She also supervised graduate students in the Macquarie University Audiology Clinic as a Clinical Educator. Pia is a founding partner and Senior Audiologist at Broadway Audiology which offers diagnostic Audiological services for infants, children and adults, hearing aid fittings and Cochlear Implant evaluations for adults. Pia has several years experience as an Audiologist working with Remote Area Health Corps Ltd in the Northern Territory, Australia where she worked as a remote Audiologist working on Closing the Gap project and setting up VROA booths in remote areas. Pia provides Audiological Care for infants, children and Adults and specialises in rehabilitation.
Pia began to move from her first career in Communications and Visual Media to Audiology when her young son was diagnosed with a permanent hearing loss. Pia worked intensively with her son to teach him to listen, speak and integrate into the mainstream education system. Formal training in Pia’s new career began at the Speech and Language Programme at University of Washington in Seattle. When her family moved to Sydney, Pia continued her Audiological studies at Macquarie University. Pia holds a Bachelors of Arts in Communications from Antioch University and a Post Graduate Diploma, Audiology and Masters of Audiology from Macquarie University. Pia also holds a Certificate IV in Assessment & Workplace Training and has significant experience lecturing for Registered Training Organisations. Pia is a Full Member of the Audiological Society of Australia with a Certificate of Clinical Practice, and a Member of the and the International Society of Audiology. Pia has a varied and interesting Audiological career. She worked with adults and children in the public sector at Australian Hearing. She has several years experience lecturing audiometry students in Australia and developing Asia/ Pacific nations. Pia has also been teaching students enrolled in the Certificate IV in Audiometric Assessment and the Diploma in Hearing Device Assessment and Evaluation and various commercial courses via face to face and distance education at TAFE NSW. At the Shepherd Centre, Pia worked in the non-profit sector with young children and their families as an Auditory Verbal Therapist, Auditory Verbal Therapist and Cochlear Implant Audiologist. Pia provided rehabilitation and assessment services in the commercial sector at Paxton Barrand Hearing Aids. Since 2008, Pia travels for a few weeks each year to remote communities in the Northern Territory to provide education and diagnostics services for Indigenous families . Pia enjoys visiting the beautiful national parks of Australia, reading, photography, cooking, learning languages and practising yoga and Pilates. |
